GLEN, NH – A Facebook post has caused a bit of a stir in the Mount Washington Valley and across New England after it claimed that story land was closing.

The satirical news organization New Hampshire News Network posted on Facebook that the Glen attraction was closing this fall. Many social media users, not realizing the page is satirical similar to the Onion, believed the post to be true.

Lauren Hawkins Marketing Director at Story Land said the post has caused them quite a headache with people calling concerned that the 60-year-old attraction was closing.

Hawkins said in a phone interview “It is absolutely not true. We don’t like to believe everything on the internet” Hawkins joked, adding “We will be open for many more years to come.”

Story Land was opened in Glen in 1954 by Bob and Ruth Morrell of North Conway, owners of the Eastern Slope Ice Cream Co. The Morrells sold Story Land in 2007. It is now owned by Palace Entertainment.

New Hampshire has been ranked among the top 10 states for the highest drug use in the country.

In a recent a WallettHub study New Hampshire was ranked 3rd and Maine was ranked 18th for drug use per state.

13 University Professor around the United States conducted the study by comparing the 50 states and the District of Columbia in three overall categories: 1) Drug Use & Addiction, 2) Law Enforcement and 3) Drug Health Issues & Rehab.

The study based its rankings on 20 metrics ranging from arrest and overdose rates to opioid prescriptions and meth-lab incidents per capita.

New Hampshire ranked 8th for Drug Use & Addiction, 6th for Law Enforcement, and 28th Drug Health Issues & Rehab.

Other results include (1=Biggest Problem; 25=Avg.)

  • 18th – Share of Teenagers Who Used Illicit Drugs in the Past Month
  • 10th – Share of Adults Who Used Illicit Drugs in the Past Month
  • 30th – Opioid Pain Reliever Prescriptions per Capita
  • 3rd – Drug Overdose Deaths per Capita
  • 10th – Drug Arrests per Capita
  • 9th – Share of Adults Who Needed but Didn’t Receive Treatment for Illicit Drug Use in the Past Year
  • 21st – Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities per 100,000 People (12 Years and Older) Using Illicit Drugs

Maine ranked 7th for Drug Use & Addiction, 39th for Law Enforcement, and 31st Drug Health Issues & Rehab.
 
Washington DC had the highest drug use in the country.

Albany, NH – A truck caught fire on Route 16 in Albany Sunday. According to the Conway Fire Department at 1:38 in the afternoon, crews were called to Route 16 just north of Monkey Trunks where a 2001 Chevy 1500 that had caught fire on.

The owner of the vehicle told authorities that the truck caught fire and he attempted to put it out with 4 extinguishers to no avail. He then moved the vehicle away from his garage and it was left under the power lines off the side of the road. Luckily the wires were only slightly damaged.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames and clear the scene by 2:15pm. The North Bound Lane of Route 16 was closed while crews worked on the fire.

The driver of the vehicle was evaluated by EMS crews for smoke and dry chemical exposure.
